The exam fee itself
The CAT MCQ examination authorisation is 2,920 AUD, current as of the AMC's published fee schedule. A 0.96% surcharge applies on credit card payment. The authorisation covers one MCQ event within a 12 month window from the date of payment.
Cancelling with supporting evidence returns 75% of the fee within one month of payment, and 50% between one month and the authorisation's end date. The AMC names the accepted grounds and the documents behind them precisely: a medical certificate signed by a registered practitioner for illness or injury, a letter from a family doctor or funeral home for bereavement, a police report for a crime or domestic violence incident, a letter from the Department of Home Affairs for visa complications, and official correspondence from a court or a solicitor's letter for court attendance. Non-attendance or any breach of exam conditions consumes the authorisation with no refund. Reissue of a results transcript costs 107 AUD.
Credential verification, and a rebrand worth knowing
Before the MCQ fee, an international medical graduate pays to have their medical qualification verified. This process now runs through MyIntealth, the platform ECFMG has migrated to from EPIC. Establishing a MyIntealth account and confirming identity costs 110 USD. Establishing an EPIC portfolio within that account is a further 35 USD. Verifying one credential with the issuing institution is 110 USD, and each additional credential requiring verification costs 110 USD again. An optional courier fee, 15 USD for institutions inside the United States and 30 USD outside it, speeds delivery of the verification request. A single primary qualification, verified with courier, runs to 285 USD before an AMC fee is paid.
English language proficiency
The Medical Board of Australia sets the English language requirement; candidates meet it through IELTS or OET.
OET's full four sub-test exam costs 587 AUD, or 455 USD for candidates testing inside the United States.
IELTS has no single global price. It is set per country by the British Council or IDP. Australia's own published fee is 490 AUD. The United States fee, published directly by the British Council, is 195 USD. Across other countries the fee typically falls between 200 and 400 USD, lower in South Asia, higher in the Gulf.
What a second attempt costs
Every new attempt requires a fresh 2,920 AUD authorisation, applied for the same way as the first. No cap on the number of attempts is published, and no AMC document lists a reduced fee for a second or later attempt.
The cost of time
Results are released three weeks after the exam, every time, without exception. Pearson VUE seats are allocated first come, first served, and the AMC tells candidates to schedule immediately once authorised because some venues fill quickly. For a candidate outside Australia, that can mean travel to a different city or country entirely to sit. Rushing into the exam before preparation is genuinely ready is one of the more expensive mistakes an international medical graduate can make.
